Our birdfeeders are a flurry of activity these days. The migratory birds are stuffing themselves prior to journeying to warmer places, and the locals are gorging too. Woodpeckers are year round residents, and their populations have increased in recent years due to the bounty left behind by beetle-killed pines. The peanut feeder is a bit tricky for them to access; they have to cling to the tree trunk and lean over. The smallest is a downy wookpecker, and the larger, a hairy woodpecker. They are very similar in appearance & markings.

Nice to see a post from your end of the world! We've even had the Pileated on the peanut feeder. However, we haven't seen the Pileated this last month or so. I do hope they are alive and healthy! Maybe they've moved up your way?!!

Wow, that is a good picture of the two birds. I don't think I have seen them side by side before to compare sizes.
That is a great picture not usual to see them together. I think the birds must have left already it is quite cold here and I haven't seen any avian activity for quite a while, although we did see magpies which are quite unusual up here. Maybe it was warm enough for them to make it over the Rockies as they are quite abundant on the other side.
